From Heart to Hand – African-American Quilts from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
In 2004, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (Montgomery, AL) inaugurated its collection of African-American quilts with an acquisition of 48 quilts created primarily by African-American women from West Alabama between 1945 and 2001. In late 2008, the Museum added ten more quilts to the collection. This exhibition includes select quilts from both groups and features the work of Yvonne Wells and Nora Ezell, whose quilts showcase the variety of styles in the MMFA’s permanent collection. 910-395-5999

Carolina Beach is the place to be for the “Film and Fireworks Series” this summer. The events will take place on Sundays and Thursdays beginning May 29, weather permitting. The weekly fireworks are hosted by the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce and the gazebo entertainment is hosted by the Boardwalk Makeover. Family-friendly movies will be held at Carolina Beach Lake Park every Sunday and a fireworks display will be on the beach near the boardwalk each Thursday at 9pm, weather permitting, and a band performing at 6:30pm. The league’s annual All-Star Fan Fest and All-Star Game will be on July 17th and 18th at the home of the Fayetteville Swamp Dogs. The Wilmington Sharks will open their 2011 home schedule on Tuesday, May 31st hosting the Fayetteville Swamp Dogs. They will be home for 30 games this season including eight “Thirsty Thursdays”. 25th Annual Pleasure Island Beach Music Festival

Kure Beach Double Sprint Triathlon
The very first “Formula 1″ or super sprint style triathlon in the U.S. The Kure Beach Double Sprint is now in it’s 15th year. Competitors start out with a 375 meter ocean swim. Upon exiting the water, participants put on their running gear at the “Beach Transition Area” and run 1.5 miles to the “Town Hall Transition Area”. Participants then complete a 10K bike ride on a closed course. With no rest – participants immediately ride the 10 K bike course again finishing at the “Town Hall Transition Area”. Then it’s back on with the running gear for the 1.5 mile run back to the “Beach Transition Area”. Participants complete the race by once again swimming the 375 meter course.
